Women's Rehab Centers

What Does A Rehab Center for Women Mean?

Like many other centers, the number one goal for each center is to provide a safe place for addicts and alcoholics to share their story and feelings. One way to provide this feeling is gender separation.

A drug rehab center for women should help its patients feel safe. Many women who get involved with the drug scene have had traumatic events happen to them, like physical or sexual abuse. Putting them in a group with men, may prohibit them from addressing their problems or completely shut down. The rates of women entering and completing a rehab and recovery program are vastly lower than the completion rates for men. This may be for may reasons, but not being comfortable within their group has a lot to do with their recovery process.

Motherhood and addiction

One of the challenges for women seeking a recovery center is motherhood. These addicts or alcoholics often put off recovery due to the necessity to raise their children. Many rehabs for women now offer housing that is equip to bring their children with them. Women who bring their children into a residential rehab receive parenting services that include intervention services, assessments, and education. These services strengthen the mother's parenting skills. The services also help to identify and reduce behaviors that contribute to child abuse, as well as neglecting their children. This environment will also help to improve the mother's ability to reenforce their children's behavior in a positive way. The centers that offer these services have skilled practitioners, parent-child specialists, and parent educators. These skilled professionals will work with mothers, to help them develop an accurate base of knowledge in regards to child development and appropriate child-rearing practices. Individual sessions and group sessions with other mothers and the staff, help mothers explore ways to improve their relationships with their children. Along with building better relationships with their children, they learn more appropriate methods to manage their children’s behavior. Nurses will also lead group sessions to teach mothers about childbirth, childcare, and before and after care for childbirth.

Catering Towards Females

Rehab centers for women must provide special attention to specific topics. These topics include body image, life fulfillment, motherhood, and eating disorders. These topics need to be address and women have an easier time relating to other women, when men are not within the group. In addition to the aspect of childcare issues on where to go, women tend to have less family support during their treatment. This makes the recovery process much more difficult, having a support system is a necessity when beginning treatment. Without a support system, women tend to carry the weight by themselves and end up relapsing. Support systems offer the stability to take time for yourself and not worry about life at home, like the possibility of losing custody of your children for going to rehab, losing your job, and various other reasons.

Women and Self Esteem Issues

While both men and women both struggle with self esteem issues, more women express and struggle with these issues. An addiction rehab center for women will focus on improving a woman's self esteem. They will provide these women with the steps to find self confidence, not only for themselves, but for their recovery. Self esteem play a huge role in the recovery process. The better outlook you have on yourself, the higher the chance for long term recovery. Most rehab centers use a variety of psycho-therapeutic methods. Cognitive behavioral therapy is one of the most common forms of therapy. This type of psychotherapy helps the addict or alcoholic identify and cope with situations that are likely to cause in a relapse. This is prepping these women for when they return home. While most rehab centers for women are just that, rehab centers for women, there may be treatment programs that also include coed group sessions for issues that are unrelated to gender. The building may have separate wings for men and women, that have coed sessions on general topics. It is the patient's choice on whether or not to attend these group sessions.

Bonding Exercises

Bonding is a healthy process that happens during a group session. Most women centers are devoted to providing women with the environment and activities to bond with each other by developing a powerful level of trust. They form a sense of community that allows them to relate and understand each other's problems and concerns. Creating a strong bond within a group allows the addict or alcoholic to discuss their experiences and feeling more openly and carefree. Bonding can also help to develop friendships that last after the end of the treatment program, which can also serve as a support system.

Differences Between Men and Women Addiction

  • Women show signs and symptoms of alcohol and drug addiction earlier than men do.
  • Women show more severe symptoms and struggles with addiction.
  • Women are more prone to mental health complications than men with addictions.
For women, entering treatment for alcohol or drug addiction is more difficult for them. This is due to social, cultural, and family norms. Women are often seen in roles like the caretaker and nurturing roles. They are seen as putting other's needs before their own needs. This is part of the reason women have a hard time seeking treatment. It is easier for them to hide their problems within, than face them and receive treatment.

Benefits of a Rehab Center for Women

Gender based programs allow women to stay focused on their own recovery process. They will be able to explore sensitive issues with female peers in a safe and supportive environment, conducive to their recovery. Most centers offer a wide range of gender specific treatment services that hone in on addressing each person's individual needs. By designing programs catered to each individual, it helps the addicts or alcoholics with their recovery path. Most centers also have the capability of dual diagnosis, which helps when women have mental illness as well as an addiction.

Types of Therapy

While there are a vast amount of therapeutic methods, there are a few that are at the top of the list for women.

Art Therapy

This therapy promotes wellness through personal expression, in the form of art. Artistic expression can be a very therapeutic tool. It helps release tension and lets your mind focus on creating artwork. Art therapy is effective for some in treatment because you do not have to use words or even make conscious choices. You just create what you want or what you are feeling that day. Art therapy serves as an outlet for suppressed thoughts and emotions, which would otherwise remain hidden. The development of a new passion and use of another outlet through which women can better express themselves is just the beginning of art therapy. Unlocking someone's artistic potential can leave them with a vast amount of confidence they never knew they had. On top of creating confidence, art therapy can serve as a new found hobby, to keep the addicts mind off of using drugs or drinking again. It will also help you to set goals for yourself. You set a goal of painting one picture per week. Setting goals for yourself helps to form commitments and responsibilities. Analyzing art that the addicts or alcoholics create helps the centers get to the bottom of their mental state as well. Analyzing their art may even bring up feelings the addicts and alcoholics did not even know they had.

Nutritional Education Counseling

Eating is an everyday part of life, but eating healthy is not always so easy, especially for addicts and alcoholics. Nutritional counseling helps women develop healthy long term dietary habits. The centers provide these women with education and guidance as to what foods are good or bad for them. Eating healthy sets a tone for your day. It energizes you and helps you focus on what tasks need to be accomplished for the day. On top of learning what is good or bad for you, the centers teach the women how to prepare healthy meals and snacks. Along with preparing and cooking healthy food, the center also teach these women how to properly go grocery shopping, which can be a stressful thing if done improperly. The centers also go over foods with addictive properties, such as chocolate and caffeinated drinks. These types of food can severely effect the recovery process. It is like trading one addiction for another. Some may not look at these foods as a problem, but when you start gaining weight and your self esteem goes down, you can find yourself in a dark place and potentially relapse. Nutritional counseling will help residents avoid unhealthy and dangerous foods. Nutritional counseling will allow addicts and alcoholics to adopt a lifestyle of healthy eating and living a better life.

These are just a few methods of therapy women use while in rehab. Most centers cater towards the individual's likes or dislike.
